At 98, Raj Kumar Vaishya Achieves Master’s Degree in Economics

In a world where higher education is often taken for granted, Raj Kumar Vaishya’s story stands as a remarkable testament to lifelong learning and resilience. At 97 years old, this extraordinary man from Bareilly has achieved what many consider unimaginable: a postgraduate degree in Economics. For Raj Kumar, this is not just an academic milestone but the crowning achievement of a life dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge.

A Journey Eight Decades in the Making

Born in 1920, Raj Kumar’s educational journey began long before India gained independence. He graduated from Agra University in 1938 with a bachelor's degree, embarking on a career that spanned decades. Yet, his hunger for learning never faded. Nearly eight decades after his first degree, he decided to return to academics, enrolling in an MA program in Economics. His accomplishment has earned him a place in the Limca Book of Records as the oldest person in India to pursue a postgraduate degree.

Breaking Barriers, Seeking No Privileges

Unlike many in his age group, Raj Kumar sought no special privileges during his academic endeavor. He prepared for and appeared in examinations alongside students a fraction of his age. His determination left university officials astounded.

“His zeal and dedication to pursue education is worthy of emulation by one and all,” said SP Sinha, Registrar of the university, speaking to Hindustan Times.

To honor his achievement, university officials personally visited Raj Kumar’s home to present him with his mark sheet—a gesture befitting his remarkable journey.

Celebrations and a Tinge of Regret

The news of Raj Kumar’s success brought joy to his family. His grandsons rushed home to celebrate their grandfather’s achievement with sweets. Yet, even amidst the celebrations, Raj Kumar harbored a single regret.

“Had I appeared for the exams earlier, I might have secured a first division,” he remarked with characteristic humility, having achieved a second division.

A Family’s Support and a Role Model for Society

Raj Kumar credits his daughter-in-law, Professor Bharti S Kumar, for her unwavering support throughout his academic journey. Bharti, a former head of history at Patna University, went out of her way to ensure he had a conducive environment to study.

“She even gave up watching her favorite TV serials and movies to keep me undisturbed,” Raj Kumar shared with a smile.

Bharti, in turn, lauded Raj Kumar’s dedication to education, calling him a role model for society. “He has always encouraged the younger generation to pursue their studies with sincerity. His achievement is an inspiration to all,” she said.

Looking Ahead: A New Mission

For Raj Kumar, earning a Master’s degree is not the end of the road but a new beginning. With his newfound time, he plans to focus on writing about socio-economic issues, particularly poverty and unemployment—subjects close to his heart. His passion for learning and contributing to society proves that age is no barrier to making a difference.

A Legacy of Lifelong Learning

Raj Kumar’s story is more than an inspiring tale of academic achievement; it is a powerful reminder that learning knows no age limit. His journey encourages us to never stop pursuing our dreams and to embrace the challenges that come our way. As he embarks on his next chapter, Raj Kumar Vaishya exemplifies the true meaning of “age is just a number.”
