As per the latest update, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved several major improvements to the centrally funded Post-Matric Scholarship Program, which aims to support SC students across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the conference. Reports also stated that the Cabinet has authorised a cumulative expenditure of over Rs 59,000 crore for this reason. A total of 4 Crore students from the Timetable are projected to benefit from the Post-Matric Scholarship Program.
Following the announcement of the decision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Today's Cabinet decision on post-matric scholarship would ensure greater access to education for young people in SC communities. Ensuring high quality and accessible education for our youth is an important area of priority for our government."
According to the information shared by the CCEA, a cumulative amount of Rs 59,000 crore has been allocated to the Post-Matric Scholarship Program. The sum of Rs 35,534 would be invested by the Union Government on the part of the percentage contributed by the States and the Central Government, while the remainder would be contributed by the States.
Speaking to the media after the Cabinet meeting, the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment of the Union, Thawarchand Gehlot, said that the latest amendments to the system will take place.
The statement also added that under the Post-Matric Scholarship System, SC students would be eligible to take any course from Class 11 onwards, with the cost of education borne by the government. "The Central assistance which was around Rs 1,100 crore annually during 2017-18 to 2019-20 would be increased more than five times to be around Rs 6,000 core annually during 2020-21 to 2025-26," the official statement said.
In addition, the Cabinet has decided to further improve surveillance urther strengthening of monitoring mechanism through conduct of social audits, annual third-party evaluation, and half-yearly self-audited reports from each institution.
