Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) V.K. Saxena has approved raising the annual income threshold for students to qualify for admission under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota in private schools, increasing it from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh. This decision, announced via a Raj Niwas notification on Monday, is expected to benefit a significantly larger number of students from economically disadvantaged families.
The Delhi High Court, in its order dated December 5, 2023, directed the Delhi government to increase the income threshold from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. However, in October, the Delhi government, through the Chief Minister, proposed raising the limit to only ₹2.5 lakh. While approving this proposal, the LG strongly urged the Chief Minister to reconsider and enhance the limit to ₹5 lakh, aligning with the High Court's directive.
Subsequently, in an order dated November 13, the High Court noted that its previous directives had not been complied with, according to the notification.
This prompted the Delhi government to once again revise the income threshold, increasing it from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, and submit the proposal to the LG for approval on Monday, the notification further stated.
