Ten new schools of specialised excellence (SoSEs) will soon start functioning in the national capital region for the 2022-23 academic session, announced the Directorate of Education (DoE). That apart, the Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS) will also be made operational in the Jharoda Kalan area of Delhi.
“Ten more schools across four specialisations (four STEM, two humanities, two performing and visual arts and two high-end 21st-century skills) are being added, while the AFPS will be operational in Jharoda Kalan. Thus, the total number of SoSEs in the academic year 2022-23 will be 31,” said a PTI report.
The SoSEs will be affiliated to the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) and will be functioning in partnership with the International Baccalaureate (IB). Admissions will be available in class IX in all the schools and in class XI in the STEM SoSEs and the AFPS, through an aptitude test or on the basis of a child’s demonstrated interest in the previous classes.
The SoSEs were started over a year ago by the Delhi government as choice-based schools. The schools aim to provide world-class infrastructure, facilities, optimum use of technology and a new-age curriculum. The government hopes to facilitate experiential learning through the schools’ projects, field visits and internships based on students’ interest.
Online application process is scheduled to start from February 17 and the aptitude test will be held between March 15-30. Students must be residents of Delhi to apply and can belong to any government, government-aided school, since minimum 50% of the seats are reserved for students from these schools. The remaining seats will be open to students from any other recognised schools in Delhi.
Minimum of 60% aggregate marks in class VI is needed for admission in class IX of any SoSE. For performing and visual arts, the minimum marks can be waived if the student has received an award in any art form in a competition at the zonal level and upwards, it has been said.
