New Delhi: Delhi's air quality took a significant hit, crossing the 400 mark and slipping into the 'Severe+' category. This prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the central government's anti-pollution body, to enforce GRAP 4 restrictions across the national capital and neighboring regions starting tonight.
Earlier in the day, CAQM had implemented GRAP 3 measures when the air quality index (AQI) hovered above 300. The panel cited "highly unfavorable meteorological conditions, including calm winds and a very low mixing height," as reasons for the rapid decline. By 4 PM, Delhi's 24-hour average AQI stood at 379, but it breached the 400 mark around 10 PM.
In a statement released later in the evening, the panel said, "Considering the steep rise in Delhi's AQI due to highly unfavorable meteorological conditions and absolute calm wind conditions, the CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP convened an emergency meeting."
