Indian-Origin Banker Quits Job For Deep Space Startup, Raises Rs 207 Crore

It was a bold leap of faith for Rohit Jha, a native of Jharkhand, when he left his secure banking job in Singapore to venture into the world of deep space and communications technology. Today, the 36-year-old entrepreneur proudly serves as the co-founder and CEO of Transcelestial, a company that has successfully raised $24 million (about ₹207 crore) in funding.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Jamshedpur, Jha moved to Singapore after high school on a scholarship to study electrical and electronic engineering at the prestigious Nanyang Technological University (NTU). His academic journey laid the foundation for his future innovations in cutting-edge technologies.

The Turning Point

In 2011, Jha joined the Royal Bank of Canada as a high-frequency trader. While working there, he discovered a major flaw in global internet connectivity.

“It was in banking that I finally realised why the internet sucked,” Jha shared in an interview with CNBC Make It. He noticed that internet service providers often prioritize high-return urban regions, leaving rural and remote areas underserved.

The Shift to Technology

Simultaneously, Jha realized that banking wasn’t his true calling. His desire to address these connectivity issues inspired him to co-found Transcelestial, a company aiming to revolutionize internet delivery through cutting-edge wireless laser technology.

A Vision for Inclusive Connectivity

With his innovative spirit, Jha is working toward bridging the digital divide by making reliable internet access available to underserved regions worldwide. Transcelestial’s mission underscores Jha’s dedication to leveraging technology for social good, a commitment that has won him accolades in the tech and business sectors.

Jha’s journey exemplifies the power of taking risks and following one’s passion, inspiring many to think beyond traditional career paths and contribute to global progress.
