Maharashtra to Make Yoga Day Celebrations Mandatory in Schools

The Maharashtra state schools will have to celebrate International Yoga Day, as directed by the state education minister Vinod Tawde recently. The International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21 June and it will now be celebrated in the state schools in Maharashtra.

He further urged the schools to celebrate Yoga Day every month in the schools, to keep a good habit among students going. He said, “To promote yoga and create awareness about its benefits, schools and colleges should celebrate yoga day every month.”

The state-level committees will look after the arrangements made by the district-level committees to facilitate the Yoga Day celebrations in the schools. The statement regarding the Yoga Day celebrations has been issued on 8 June 2016 by the office of the state education minister Vinod Tawde.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has suggested making Yoga a regular activity in schools with grades attached to it. The Ministry of HRD has also laid emphasis on the Yoga Day celebrations in India. Principal of Rajhans Vidyalaya, Andheri has said, “We have compulsory yoga for students of Classes 1 to 10, then why do we need to have a separate token celebration every month?”

“We already have a period for yoga every week. Celebrating Yoga Day every month will become a little tedious to manage with academics.” Principal of Swami Vivekananda High School, Chembur, Cynthia Dawson.
