NCERT includes National War Memorial Poem in Class 6 NCERT

On September 20, the Ministry of Education (MoE) declared that a chapter named "Veer Abdul Hameed" and a poem named "National War Memorial" would be added to the NCERT curriculum for Class 6 starting this year, in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.

In order to "inculcate the values of patriotism, devotion to duty and courage & sacrifice among the school children and participation of youth in Nation building," the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Defence collaborated on this program.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) emphasized that the poem ‘National War Memorial’ aims to appreciate the spirit of sacrifice and bravery. The chapter titled ‘Veer Abdul Hameed’ pays tribute to CQMH Abdul Hameed, who heroically gave his life during the 1965 India-Pakistan war and was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award.

As part of a broader effort to establish the National War Memorial (NWM) as an iconic national monument, the Ministry of Defence has partnered with the Ministry of Education and NCERT to incorporate references to the NWM in the school curriculum.

A number of changes have been made to the NCERT Class 6 Social Science textbook, including calling the Harappan civilisation the "Sindhu-Sarasvati" and "Indus-Sarasvati" civilisations, mentioning the Sarasvati river multiple times and citing its desiccation as one of the causes of the Harappan society's decline, and mentioning that India once had a "prime meridian of its own" known as the "Ujjayini meridian."
