New Delhi, October 31, 2024 – In a celebration of India's rich textile heritage, politician Alka Lamba, President, All India Mahila Congress visited the Andhra Handloom Exhibition at Andhra Bhavan in New Delhi. Organized by a dedicated group of weavers from Andhra Pradesh, the exhibition showcased an array of handwoven sarees and garments that highlight the intricate craftsmanship unique to Andhra’s weavers.

Lamba, a known advocate for women’s empowerment, praised the exhibit's efforts to sustain traditional crafts and bring economic benefits to artisans. During her visit, she highlighted the saree as not only a representation of India’s cultural legacy but also a means of empowerment for women across the country.

"Sarees are more than just clothing," Lamba stated. "They are woven with the identity, pride, and resilience of countless women. When women wear sarees, they wear history, tradition, and power. Supporting handlooms, in turn, empowers rural women and weavers by providing them a source of income and a sense of independence."

The exhibition featured a wide variety of sarees, from the brightly coloured Kalamkari, Mangalagiri, Ponduru shirtings to the soft and breathable Uppada cottons. Many visitors explored the designs and textures that Andhra Pradesh’s weaving community had brought to life, with an emphasis on eco-friendly, natural dyes and sustainable production techniques.

With the saree industry heavily reliant on skilled artisans, initiatives like these not only preserve cultural heritage but also bolster financial security for the artisans behind the craft.

The exhibition runs through till November 2nd in the national capital and promises a unique opportunity for Delhiites to explore and support the traditional artistry of Andhra Pradesh.
