Shyam Benegal, giant of Indian cinema, passes away



Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday after battling a chronic kidney-related illness. The 90-year-old filmmaker breathed his last at around 6:30 pm at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, his daughter Pia Benegal confirmed to India Today.

Benegal was celebrated for his groundbreaking films such as Ankur, Mandi, and Manthan, which were pivotal to the parallel cinema movement in India during the 1970s and 1980s.

The filmmaker celebrated his birthday on December 14 surrounded by friends and family. The grand celebration was attended by notable figures such as actors Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Divya Dutta, Shabana Azmi, Rajit Kapur, Atul Tiwari, and filmmaker-actor Kunal Kapoor, son of Shashi Kapoor, among others.

Shyam Benegal was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. His illustrious career included acclaimed films such as Manthan, Zubeidaa, and Sardaari Begum.
