In a landmark move, six central universities in India will now offer admissions twice a year, as announced by the Union Ministry of Education. This policy, approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), is designed to provide students with increased opportunities to enrol in higher education institutions (HEIs) and make the admission process more flexible.
The following universities will implement the biannual admission system:
Central University of Punjab
Central University of Rajasthan
University of Hyderabad
Tezpur University
Nagaland University
This initiative aims to accommodate a broader spectrum of students, reduce academic gaps, and align the Indian education system with global standards.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced a flexible biannual admissions policy for higher education institutions (HEIs), leaving the decision to adopt it at the discretion of each institution. Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar emphasized that universities must ensure careful planning of activities like semester examinations to facilitate a smooth implementation of this policy.
This initiative is anticipated to enhance accessibility to higher education by offering students more frequent admission opportunities. It also aligns with the vision of creating a more inclusive and student-centric education system.
While six central universities have already embraced the biannual admissions model, the UGC encourages other HEIs to consider the shift based on their readiness and operational capacity. This progressive step marks a move towards greater adaptability in India's higher education landscape.
