The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced new regulations granting undergraduate (UG) students the flexibility to complete their degrees either earlier or later than the standard duration. Announced by UGC Chief M. Jagadesh Kumar, the initiative reflects a student-centric approach, aimed at making higher education more adaptable to individual needs.
Outlined in the Compendium of UGC Regulations, the guidelines empower higher education institutions (HEIs) to offer two innovative pathways: the accelerated degree programme and the extended degree programme.
The accelerated degree programme allows academically exceptional students or those earning additional credits to graduate ahead of schedule. On the other hand, the extended degree programme provides a supportive framework for students facing personal, financial, or academic challenges, enabling them to complete their degrees over an extended period without penalties.
