UGC Invites Nominations for Padma Awards 2026: Recognising India’s Unsung Heroes and Outstanding Achievers

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a circular inviting all higher education institutions across the country to submit nominations and recommendations for the Padma Awards 2026—which include the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. These prestigious honours are among India’s highest civilian awards, announced annually on Republic Day.

These awards celebrate ‘work of distinction’ across diverse fields such as art, literature and education, science and engineering, public affairs, sports, medicine, social work, civil service, trade and industry. Importantly, they are open to all Indian citizens, regardless of occupation, gender, position, or background.

How to Nominate

As per the UGC's notification, nominations must be submitted exclusively through the Rashtriya Puraskar portal at https://awards.gov.in between March 15 and July 31, 2025.

Each nomination should be accompanied by a detailed citation (maximum 800 words) clearly outlining the nominee’s outstanding achievements and contributions. Institutions are advised to ensure the information provided is complete, accurate, and well-documented.

Special Focus on Unsung Heroes

The UGC has highlighted the need to identify and honour unsung heroes—those who may not seek public attention but have made exceptional contributions in their fields. Institutions are especially encouraged to recommend individuals from underrepresented groups, including women, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), persons with disabilities, and economically or socially disadvantaged communities.

Priority should be given to nominees with a proven record of lifelong service and excellence. The circular also clarifies that serving government employees are generally not eligible, with the exception of doctors and scientists. Posthumous nominations are considered only in rare cases and typically within one year of the person’s passing.

Institutional Role and Resources

To ensure a thorough and fair selection process, institutions are encouraged to form internal screening committees to identify and forward the most deserving candidates.
